Blood Drive

World Languages

Each spring the Department of Germanic Studies hosts High School Day at UIC. German teachers and their students from throughout the Chicago area come to UIC to participate in various German language competitions, to visit undergraduate German classes, and to take part in language games. OE has participated in the UIC German High School Day Competition since 2008.

This year OE Students participated in the following events, which are done completely in German and judged by native speakers, as well as UIC professors and graduate assistants:

Poetry Recitation Willow Olson recited Die Lorelei by Heinrich Heine

Iris Gustafson recited Ein Weib by Heinrich Heine

Culture Essay Jac Conley wrote and presented his research Essay addressing Asylpolitik

Skits in German Graham Albery and Hans Parla performed a skit addressing music genres

Spelling Bee Christopher Daguinsin participated in a spelling bee

Please note German words are not short!

City Guide Everett Johnson and Thomas Coffin acted out a scene in Bern, Switzerland

Werbespot-Video Jac Conley prepared the script and idea, and performed with

Christopher Daguisin to create an advertisement for the German Language and culture.

A campus tour and a college class were also offered. Firasat Huda, Avalina Le, and Suranjan Sinha where they interacted with college students and instructors with the topic of clothing and fashion. They also watched a video on the topic.

Students who make it to the final rounds present to the entire crowd and the Finale Judges, who this year were the following dignitaries:

Herr Leonhard Emmerling - Director, Goethe Institut Chicago

Frau Roberta Neuhäusler - Consulate General of Switzerland, Chicago

Frau Mariella Marx - Advantage Austria, Chicago

Konsul Michael Ahrens - German Consulate General, Chicago

Vize-Konsul Phillip von Dreusche - German Consulate General, Chicago

I am so proud of all of our students who participated. They ALL went beyond their comfort area to try something new, to challenge themselves, and to gain experience in a college setting!

Everett Johnson and Thomas Coffin advanced to the final rounds in City Guide, where they earned 3rd place trophy.

Jac Conley and Christopher Daguinsin earned 3rd place trophy in the Werbespot.

Jac Conley earned 2nd place trophy in the Cultural Essay!

Kendall Youth 5K

We hope you will join us for the annual S.K.Y. (Supporting Kendall Youth) 5K run/walk on May 11th. The walk is a partnership between the Kendall County Juvenile Justice Council (The council helps to prevent delinquency by effectively utilizing community resources to assist at risk youth and their families and to provide youth the opportunity to reach their full potential.) and CASA Kendall County (A non-profit membership organization which advocates for the best interest of children who have experienced abuse and neglect).

The walk is just one way these groups work to raise money to support the various needs of our at risk youth and their families. For every person who registers online, the Kendall County Juvenile Justice Council will also donate $10 to go towards our school's T.A.L.K. Program. When you register, there is a spot on the website to type in who you heard about the event from.  Please just put in the organization name (OEHS TALK Program), so we will get the monetary credit. Any money donated will be used to help offset costs to pay for our speakers, lunch, snacks, supplies, t-shirts, etc., so that the 280 plus students and staff who participate each year don't have to incur any of the costs. If you register BEFORE MARCH 13th, you save between $5-$10 depending on your age bracket. We hope to see you there!

Thanks:)
